About Clayton Homes.

Clayton Homes has been in business since 1966 starting in Tennessee with one home center by Jim Clayton. Jim and his family grew the company to one of the nations largest home builders. Kevin Clayton, Jim’s son is now CEO of the company. We have many affiliated companies, retail home centers, building facilities, insurance company, home lenders, site-built construction. On a more local level, we build homes all over western Colorado and eastern Utah. We offer general contracting service in many locations, complete factory warranty services for all our builders plus we offer a great construction funding program to our customers. Clayton Homes will purchase land for home buyers, pay for the infrastructure and pay for the new home. When the project is complete the home buyers lender will pay Clayton Homes off. The best part is we charge no fees or interest to the home buyer and only require a deposit equal to their perm loan requirements. Great Program that lets anyone build their dream home.

In 2013 Clayton Homes purchased our current 3.5-acre location and we built one of the premier home centers in the nation. We started with 1750 square foot office and recently completed a 570 square foot addition. We have 13 team members comprised of two co-general managers, six sales professionals, a customer care manager, a project manager, a customer care representative and two full-time customer care technicians plus we have a number of subcontractors who we have long-term relations. We display 12 – 15 heated display homes fully furnished and decorated. Our display homes range from 1,000 square foot three bedroom, two baths up to 2,750 square foot four bedroom two 1/2 bath ranch style home. We also offer multi-level homes, both two-story and cape cod style homes. Multi-family duplex, triplex, and larger are also available. We also offer and can custom build tiny homes. We are open six days a week but closed Sundays to allow our team members time with their families. Every Saturday is an open house.

About you and your family.

I was born in Salem, Oregon. Our family moved to Pueblo, Colorado in 1975, and later moved to Canon City. I graduated from Canon City High School in 1982. I met my wife, Mary in 1984 and we were married in 1989. Mary and I are co-general managers at Clayton Homes. We have two children, Riley and Kelsey. Riley is studying for his master’s degree in Anatomy at CU Denver, and Kelsey is a dual business major at Colorado Mesa University. We have been blessed to be able to work with our family members and great employees for the last 20 plus years.

How did you get started in the building industry?

I began in 1984 working as a salesperson for my father. He began in the industry in 1969. My first job in manufactured housing was in Pueblo. Later, I became a home center manager in Canon City and moved with family to Grand Junction in 1988. My father and I became partners in 1988 and managed Bob’s Quality Housing in Grand Junction for four and a half years until 1992 when we opened our own home center, Golden Villa Homes. We owned Golden Villa Homes until August of 2013. While owning Golden Villa Homes we grew to five home centers, a parts and supply store, transport company, home installation company and general contracting. While at GVH we placed over 3,000 families into homes in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. In August of 2013, we were acquired by Clayton Homes, the largest manufactured home builder retailer in the nation. Clayton Homes has 350 home centers through out the US and 40 manufacturing facilities. Clayton Homes is a Berkshire Hathaway company.

How has the industry changed since you got started?

In 1984 most of the homes sold were HUD manufactured homes. The choice of custom design was not available; you had limited color and selection options and most homes were financed by Chattel lenders (home only lenders). Today almost every manufacturer offers both HUD manufactured homes and IRC Modular Homes. They allow custom design, have diverse options and are available in more diverse sizes starting as small as 400 square foot up to 3,000 plus square feet. The largest building we built was over 6,000 square foot.

What kind of services do you offer?

We are a one-stop-shop for all of your building plans. We can take a napkin sketch to finished construction plans that are ready to be submitted for a building permit.

Engineering is very important in construction and we have a professional engineer partner, Shawn Greenwood, who provides engineering to our clients exclusively.

We also provide 3D renderings of home exterior plans as well as floor plan renderings. Over the years we have developed thousands of stock plans for our clients to choose from. This speeds up their design time by not having to start from scratch.

We work with large builders who need entire subdivision home plans designed by us, as well as smaller home builders who might build one or two homes per year. We have many custom homeowners who come to us for home design plans that they take to the home builder of their choice for construction.

We are familiar with many different types of construction such as log homes, insulated concrete forms, structural insulated panels, strawbale homes and even adobe block construction.

We provide engineered foundation plans and structural wood framing plans with our partner company Greenwood Engineering Inc.

How are you involved in the community?

Luckily, we have a great team at our home center. Our sales professionals have up to 20 years experience in offering factory-built homes in western Colorado. My customer staff has been with us for almost two decades. This has allowed us to work with Habitat for Humanity, the Rocky Mountain Home Association, and volunteer with the State of Colorado Division of Housing.

What unique project have you completed?

Although many of our projects are basic homes, we enjoy building more complex homes that no one could tell was factory built. We are very good at utilizing what the factory does well and then spice it up with site-built additions and finishes. In the last few years, we completed an award-winning 2100 sq ft home near Basalt that actually increased values of surrounding site-built homes. We also completed a 41 home project in just over 120 days, also in the Roaring Fork Valley. Currently, we are working on a seven-building, 41 living unit multi-family project that is affordable housing for employees. Our team and the Grand Junction Home Center is generally in the top five percent of Clayton Homes retail sales centers nationally.

What do you enjoy about living in western Colorado?

I love the people of western Colorado. Everyone is friendly and more laid-back compared to the front range. Of course, this part of the state is the most beautiful. There are also lots of outdoor activities that you can do with friends and family.
